TAYLOR, C. RICHARD, RAZI DMI'EL, MICHAEL FEDAK, AND KNUT SCHMIDT-NIELSEN. Energetic cost of running and heat balance in a large bird, the rhea. Am. J. Physiol. 221(Z): 597-601. 1971.-The energetic cost of running in the rhea (Rhea americana), determined as oxygen consumption, increased linearly with increasing speed. Oxygen consumption (M, ml 02 g-1 hr-I) relative to running velocity (v, km hr-l) could be expressed by the linear equation: M = 0.34 v + 0.39. Within the limits of accuracy, this relationship was identical in experiments at air temperatures of 25, 35, and 43 C. This cost of running is about twice the predicted value for a quadrupedal mammal of the same size, a situation similar to that observed in another bipedal animal, man. Body temperature increased during running, and heat storage accounted for a major part of the heat balance. For example, 75% of the heat produced when birds ran for 20 min at 10 km hr-l and air temperature of 43 C was stored. Increased evaporation plays a minor role in the temperature regulation of the rhea during running.

The energetic cost of maintaining lateral balance during human running.
To quantify the energetic cost of maintaining lateral balance during human running, we provided external lateral stabilization (LS) while running with and without arm swing and measured changes in energetic cost and step width variability (indicator of lateral balance). We hypothesized that external LS would reduce energetic cost and step width variability of running (3.0 m/s), both with and wi...
متن کاملThe effects of step width and arm swing on energetic cost and lateral balance during running.
In walking, humans prefer a moderate step width that minimizes energetic cost and vary step width from step-to-step to maintain lateral balance. Arm swing also reduces energetic cost and improves lateral balance. In running, humans prefer a narrow step width that may present a challenge for maintaining lateral balance. However, arm swing in running may improve lateral balance and help reduce en...
متن کاملA novel mathematical model of formulation design of emulsion explosive
A novel mathematical model has been developed to aid the formulation of emulsion explosives. This mathematical model calculated heat of explosion, oxygen balance and raw material cost as a function of explosive ingredients, and the solution of the mathematical model was obtained by a MS Excel program. The effects of the different content of NH4NO3, NaNO3, H2O, and span-80 and composite fuel oil...

متن کاملSurface current balance and thermoelectric whistler wings at airless astrophysical bodies: Cassini at Rhea
Sharp magnetic perturbations found by the Cassini spacecraft at the edge of the Rhea flux tube are consistent with field-aligned flux tube currents. The current system results from the difference of ion and electron gyroradii and the requirement to balance currents on the sharp Rhea surface. Differential-type hybrid codes that solve for ion velocity and magnetic field have an intrinsic difficul...
